The agility season is in full swing here in the UK. I am quite exhausted from the hectic pace of the preparation for the big event let alone running around the ring trying to keep one step ahead of my Border Collie and my Sheltie.
Monday 27th August was the last day of a four day event held at Shuttleworth in Bedfordshire. My Border collie had on each day been so close to getting his first clear round but had made a couple of mistakes on the weaves. On Monday, i just had this feeling that he was going to do well. Everything went great from the start. He is a very fast dog, which as you probably know means it is more difficult to get that clear round. As he was coming down the A frame, making his contacts as he always does, I said "ok" and sent him on, only to see the judge wrongly wave his hand and call a fault!!! This particular judge had already called the same fault on several other dogs who had also made the contact! To make things worse, the rest of our round went clear, even the weave poles which sometimes cause us bother. So, our first clear round, in fast time and no rosette to show for it. Lots of other people were complaining but sadly the judges decision is final! Oh well, off again on Friday - different judge. How are you all doing? Regards, Marion

Hi Marion,
Yes I'm curious about the agility rules in the UK. Isn't it that only the first place dog qualifies? Here in the USA everyone can qualify if you run the course right. And here, also, we do compete by height. I didn't know you guys didn't. But there are measuring judges at many trials and it doesn't cost extra.

New agility rules have been introduced in the UK. Now dogs compete according to size which has put a lot of the smaller Border Collies against Shelties. As with anything new the rules have been the source of controversy. There is never anyone available to measure a dog which is annnoying as the dog cannot compete until it is measured. Again as usual there is a fee to be paid which although is only a few pounds it adds to the overall expenses of competing in Agility. There again, being humans we tend to gripe at anything new. Me, I welcome running my sheltie against the borders. It keeps both of us on our toes and gives us a competitive edge...
Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I could keep in touch with you all and let you know what Agility is like over here.......

Well I'm glad you are okay with it! Happy 3rd Birthday Johann! We have a trial this weekend too, AKC, hopefully it'll be short but we'll see, the club running it usually runs slow. And very cool you saw the collies again!

Wow - we are so honored!!! Thanks so much for featuring us!!! Awesome!

Johann is coming up on his 3rd birthday this month, what a great birthday present!

We're definitely in on your meme - just gotta get through the trial this weekend. It was 85degrees and 80% humidity today - needless to say Johann and I both goofed up a bit from the heat. But tomorrow is to be very nice, weather wise.

BTW - Johann is 18 lbs. He's a little guy, but comes across big! BOL!!! If he wasn't so testy sometimes, I do bet he and Chase would have fun together. Although Johann is really like a couple of Collies around here - Rose and Grace. We saw them run today!
