It seems to me that you forget to mention that most dogs are protective of their owners and environment. So, of course, some dogs are better for home security and property protection. However, I truly believe in their natural sixth sense of danger. So a well loved dog will instinctively do something to warn it's family when somethings off.

Hi Rachael, Yeah I agree, too many guard dogs are thrown in the backyard and neglected. :( Dogs need to be part of the family. And I've heard of stories of people ignoring their dogs barking... sticking them in the garage to shut them up, and then the burglar knows they are safe and comes in! Ugh.

Hahaha! If someone broke into my house, Moxie would greet them with a kiss and show them where we keep the valuables. A little TOO helpful this one is.

I generally think its a bad idea to get a dog JUST for protections. Often these dogs aren't properly trained or socialized and end up hurting/biting innocent people or kids and then they get put down. Not the dogs fault, they were just protecting like they thought they were supposed to do. So sad. Also, all too often these "guard dogs" aren't properly looked after. Locked in a yard with kibble thrown at them every now and then is no life for a pack animal.
