What are they eating now?

I haven’t blogged about my dogs’ diets in a long time. Last July… one year ago in fact, I started feeding them raw. I avoided reading about it for a long time, knowing that once I read all the info, and the bad things about kibble (low quality kibble especially) that I’d switch. Finally I read the info, and I switched the dogs.

Well, they are doing super on raw. They all love to eat, and I love feeding them fresh foods. After trying Prey Model raw, and BARF, and Volhard.. I’ve decided on a combination. We still follow Volhard, but mostly I put it together myself now instead of buying the dehydrated version that I get through the mail, and need bigger Mailboxes for! But all those supplements… are they really necessary, what do you think?

I found a local game processing plant that sells ground elk/buffalo mix for $0.69 a pound. They have been getting that with some chicken with bone. I might go buy some more chicken necks. I really think it’s odd to feed bone meal, why not feed the whole bone? Jen will probably come dispute me about this. ;)
Anyway, feeding raw is great. It’s messy, it’s time consuming, but it’s so worth it!

We’ve also had to go modified Volhard. Qor is allergic to wheat and that’s a main ingredient in the PM mix. Qay has decided that NDF PM is stinky.. so Qor gets Oma’s Pride Turkey and Qay gets Oma’s Pride Chicken (both with veggies) and they get a multivitamin (Azmira Mega Pet Daily).

The all get Volhard AM Mix with Kefir (home made) .

Targ is still on straight NDF.

I do think that the vitamins are necessary, only because with all the environmental challenges they get, I dont’ know that what they get from food is enough.

Sounds good, it’s good to know customizing for each dog is a good thing. And yeah.. in the wild the dogs/wolves would get more nutrients from natural wildlife, but since we feed them farm raised food, they probably don’t get everything they need. I’ve been supplementing.

Oops .. missed the bit about whole bone vs bone meal.

Honestly.. the kids are getting ground bone in our house right now.. I don’t *personally* see the difference. :D

I guess bone meal might be safer than bones.. they can’t really choke on bone meal.
