Cottage Cheese Day

I don’t know if the dogs like Cottage Cheese Day better than raw meat days… but Wendy Volhard recommends that the dogs have a day off meat to let their bodies relax and clean out.

Thursdays is usually Cottage Cheese Day at our house. The dogs love the stuff, and ate their breakfasts heartily. I hate the stuff. I try it every time I feed it, and every time I hate it. Actually, there was one brand that wasn’t too bad, but now I don’t remember which it is.

Chase’s Gotcha Month

We got Chase three years ago this month. I am not sure of the day, I think it was the 21st but I’ll have to look it up. He was dropped off at our house covered in poop, recently recovered from the Utah County Shelter.

He humped every darn thing and my first thought was, this boy is getting neutered. :) He was going to be a foster dog. But he fit in so well, was mellow, seemed to have a nice off switch, and I thought he’d be great for both agility and flyball, so we kept him. He made four dogs in the house.

We love him, he is a great boy, and yes, to my expectations, he is great at agility and flyball! He is a challenge to train and I’m learning whole new things about dog training, and I am loving every minute.

We are glad you came to live with us Chase!

Training Update

Well, yesterday (Tuesday the 24th) Chase, Levi and I went out to the agility field and practiced some more. Focus focus focus. Attention attention attention. Chase at least. Levi didn’t get to run much just because he doesn’t really need all that much work. And I think the more I do work with him, the worse he gets. So he just gets a little bit of fun.

Chase needs tons of work. We did our basics, calling to a come instead of running the sequence. Running the sequence and teaching me how to run him and where I should be. Things I really need to learn.

At the end some other people came out and set up a practice course, short 9 obstacles. I ran Chase through.. and it was tight, and he did great! He paid attention and everything. Knocked some bars but that’s okay. I’m still learning to handle him.

August 4th and he’ll be in two gamblers runs with ASCA, I hope we do well! It will be a good test of where we are in our training.

Nasty Dry Crap

Nasty Dry CrapTo read what it says, click the image for a full sized view. It’s very cute… well, at least to the raw feeders out there. :)

My dogs still get some kibble, occasionally with dinner, and also as treats when they are getting their nails trimmed. I don’t think it’s all nasty dry crap, but I do think this is a funny pic! It’s a door mat, or dog feeding mat, whichever you want to use is for. Just put down the bowls in the circles!

Holiday Tomorrow

Yay tomorrow is a holiday here in Utah. The bad thing is that it’s another fireworks holiday. So Chase and Angel have been medicated so they will sleep through tonight, and we’ll do the same for tomorrow night. Lucy and Levi don’t mind the bangs much.

The good thing is I get the day off. I’ll be taking Chase and Levi for agility/obedience practice in the morning and see how they are doing. Then the rest of the day I get to be a bum. Yay!

Flyball Again

Well, Chase and I have been going and practicing with the Thunder Paws Flyball club here in Utah. And so far, so good. Chase is a great flyball dog, and he’s doing really well. He is fumbling the ball at the box most of the time, though. He really didn’t used to do that at practice. Maybe half the time… now it’s most. But we have some ideas of what to do to get him to catch that darn ball.

It can’t be that hard, the ball comes out exactly the same angle every time! Goofball Chase. :)

Anyway, we are having fun. We are hoping to go to the U-FLI tournament in Longmont, Nevada, the last week of October. If we do that, I’m probably going to get in the 3 day agility trial the very next weekend in October, and bring both Levi and Chase down. If I’m there it’d seem a waste not to go.

My boss tells me if I can find internet connection, I can even work from there. Woot!

Environmental Health

I like to think of myself as an environmentalist… I recycle, I do what I can to reduce my impact on the earth. I do think most individuals do the same things, now. We can’t deny the information we see everywhere, the TV, newspapers, and even in the break room around the water cooler, that our planet is in danger if we don’t stop polluting. And I consider my dogs very close to nature, more so than humans, and so I try to put myself closer to nature as well.

I was born in Chicago, Illinois, and the great lakes are still close to my heart. And so when I see that there might be a company polluting one of the great lakes, Lake Michigan, my interest is peaked.

There is a debate going on about a BP Factory in Whiting, Indiana, that has received permission from the government to discharge more ammonia and sludge into Lake Michigan. This Chicago Tribune Article give more detailed information about what is going on. I’ll not repeat it here, as the article is informative on it’s own and I recommend for you to read it. The BP’s Whiting Refinery Fact Sheet, on the other hand, disputes some of the claims made in the Chicago Tribune Article. It states that it’s discharge is safe and well within national regulations and legal limits. It states that there is no harm to humans or to the environment (I assume this also means dogs and other animals). And that more jobs will be provided, and jobs are so very important in our society.

Why are they allowed to discharge more waste into the Lake? Because they are refining crude oil from Canada. And this is beneficial because it will reduce our reliance on middle east oil. I whole heartedly support a reduction on middle eastern oil. So the theory is, in order to reduce our dependence on middle east oil, we need to process more Canadian.

I would rather, however, support renewable energy sources rather than any type of oil refinement. It is amazing how much of our world economy is based on oil. When I really look into it, I am stunned. So maybe instead of which oil do we use, we need to think outside the box, as they say, and look at alternatives altogether.

However, that will not happen anytime soon. Should BP be allowed to dump more discharge into Lake Michigan? Are they really following all the regulations they are supposed to? What is more important, that lake, or the need to get rid of our dependence on middle east oil?

Is it a balance that can be reached? I don’t know. Personally, I support the Lake, and the environment. But there are those that disagree. And perhaps it is not a question about oil vs environment. Perhaps both can work together? I am not an optimist, however, and I have my doubts.
