A Positive Training TV Show

There’s a lot of news and hype about Cesar Millan and his dog training methods. Some people love him. Some people hate him. I have never watched him because I don’t have the channel he is on… isn’t it the National Geographic Channel or something? I don’t even know for sure. But I hang out in positive dog training circles with people who support and use clicker training and positive methods, and my friends in these circles do not like him, and so I tend to sway toward the side that I don’t like him, either. I trust the opinions of my friends.
I recently got Animal Planet on my Dish Network. And I’ve been watching Victoria Stilwell on her show It’s me or the dog. And I haven’t heard much about her from my friends, but so far I really like her. I went to her website, too, and read her bio, and she does train with positive methods and she has helped out the ASPA and she is a member of the APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers). These are good signs.
The show is short, only 30 minutes, and I’m sure there are a ton of things going on, a ton of time being spent, that we can’t see in 30 minutes. But I really enjoy her innovative and creative methods of training. She doesn’t use crates, which I think is odd because I use them a lot, but she really has some great ideas about how to be a leader and have dogs behave.
So I recommend her show. Have you watched it? What do you think? Do you like Cesar or not? Just curious.

I haven’t seen her, I’ll have to check it out. I like Cesar. Almost all his cases involve the people not being pack leaders, and that’s the truth. He could do what he does with kids, I’m serious. It’s all in the attitude and the body language and not allowing them to take a dominant position. I think he’s pretty cool. I think he uses positive training methods and again, most of his training is with the owners, the dogs being dogs fall right in line. The owners take a little longer
I’m really interested in clicker training. The folks who started that, Karen Pyror, began here at Sea Life Park training dolphins back in the 70’s. I plan on using that training with my next dogs, my guys are too old and arthritic now. I’ve also heard they’ve perfected it for birds. I want to get a parrot and train it too.

Hi Flo, thanks for your input, I like to see all sides of an issue.
Clicker training is amazing. I started it because of my sensitive rescue girl, Angel. I could not correct her for anything and had to find an all positives method of training her. It works great and she loves it!

I’ve seen Victoria’s show. It’s good and does have very positive methods. I still watch Cesar sometimes. He just makes me think of things in a variety of ways, I like input before I make decisions about training, and I like getting new ideas to improve upon.

I’m a big fan of Victoria Stillwell. My only issue with Cesar is I get more of a feeling of “do it because I say so”… not “let’s work together and do it because you want to”

I’ve seen both shows, and I think they are more similar than different. Cesar uses alot of positive training methods, and most of what he teaches is how to be a pack leader, which is what Victoria teaches too. I would say that the two agree entirely when it comes to the main crux of what dog training requires. You should watch Cesar sometime. I think hes got some stuff on Utube. The only thing I’ve seen him do that I didn’t like was use a shock collar, but he doesn’t do it often, and in one case, I really do think it saved the dogs life (She was chasing cars/tractors/etc and had already been run over twice) I’m always amazed at how much the cesar haters will rail on Cesar but rave about Victoria when they are really SO similar in their methods and ideology.
