Good Seminar

I enjoyed the seminar this weekend. The days were too long, and yesterday, Saturday, was rainy, even snowy, and too cold. We moved indoors in the afternoon because it was pouring rain and even snowed. It was still cold, even with 5 layers of clothes on. I couldn’t find my winter jacket. Hrmph.

Chase did really well. He only worked today. We got some good tips on his heeling and his dumbbell. He doesn’t like to hold the dumbbell, I just have to work it some more. We also got some tips on when he won’t release his toy. He gets into high drive and does not want to let go. We’ve tried letting the toy go slack, pulling up on his collar, waiting him out… nothing has worked. So we have now resorted to the flank pinch. It’s not really a pinch, but it causes his mouth to open and he lets go of the toy. He doesn’t much like it, either. Hopefully that’ll convince him to release that toy even when he is high.

I brought Tatum today, too. She did super. It was too long of a day for her, though. We left around 4pm, and people were still there. She sat in the car most of the day, but we did some socialization with the dog people, with a dog around her because she is more comfortable with another dog. She sat with me ringside for about 20 minutes, too. She was taking and eating chicken, so that was a good sign. She just needs experiences, everything is so new to her. It was too stressful for her, she came back home and had diarrhea and then threw up. But she’s been playing her bouncy rabbit play with Bianca for a little while. Now she has settled down. She needs sleep and to rest and recover, and she’ll be fine.

So now I’m home watching Numbers and relaxing. It was a long weekend. I’m so glad I don’t work tomorrow.

Obedience Seminar Weekend

The topic of this post reminds me… I better check my email to see what time it starts in the AM… UGH… UGH UGH UGH it starts at 8am both days! Man. How come these things can’t start later. Say, like 10AM? That would be so much better for me. That way I could sleep in. Well, attempt to sleep in, anyway. Ms Tatum wants to get up every day at 6am. We have been working on this since we get up when I say, not when she says.

Anyway, I’m just cranky with PMS and I don’t feel well, so I want to sleep a lot, and I haven’t been able to. I love sleep it’s how I cope.

The Obedience Seminar should be fun. Saturday I am auditing, and Sunday I am bringing Chase. We should get some good training ideas!

A Visit from Sonny

Our rough collie boy, Sonny, who found a home recently, came back to visit last night. We are going to take him in for a teeth cleaning today because we had it scheduled.

He is so much fun to have around, and I didn’t realize how much I missed him until I saw him again. He was so happy to see me, too, he danced and pranced around. It’s very nice to be remembered!

He was sad, though, when his new Dad left and he didn’t get to go with. He is such a good boy. His Dad said that Sonny checks every bed at night, and if any of them are empty (they have 6 kids, some are college age) he will go and wait by the door until they come home. He is such a good collie boy to make sure his family is all home and safe. I love that boy.

A Fairy Tale

I did not write this, it was sent to me by my amazing obedience instructor.

Joe and the power of confused social status

Joe accepts a job at a new office. He¹s pretty nervous because no one told him exactly what his job would be.

When he arrives, everyone treats him like a celebrity! They are SO anxious to make him comfortable. They give him his choice of offices, make sure he is comfortable, and they give him extra bonus checks just for sitting at his desk. Everyone seems to really like him and they compliment him on his looks, and laugh at all his jokes. No one ever tells him what to do and no one seems to expect anything from him, so he doesn’t really do anything but play Solitaire on his computer, shop online, and chat with friends on the phone.

They even bring Joe tasty lunches every day and never ask to be reimbursed. If he doesn¹t like what they bring, they offer him some of their own lunches.

If Joe wants to leave early, he just says so and someone even rushes off to open the door for him.

Joe is happy with this situation and feels very important. He figures any day they will put a sign on his door that says ‘COMPANY PRESIDENT’. He even has business cards made up with that title and leaves one or two on everyone¹s work stations. No one says anything because they love Joe so much and he is so handsome after all…

As the weeks go by, Joe begins to feel anxious…He realizes that he really IS the Company President and he had better start paying attention to details and making sure all the others in the office are doing what he thinks they should be doing and when.

Joe begins to assume the role of ‘The Boss’ but does so gradually and the other workers don¹t really notice it, but the pressure of being unprepared for management is giving him a daily headache that makes him irritable.

One day, Mary sees Joe counting a fat wad of cash and asks Joe to pay for his own lunch. Joe is taken aback and says in a loud, gruff voice, ‘NO WAY! This is MY money! Go AWAY!’

Mary is shocked! Her feelings are so hurt. She tells the others in the office, ‘Joe was rude to me! Haven’t we all been so nice to him? WHY would he do that?’

Upon hearing this, a large man named Rex stands up and says, ‘That is just unacceptable. I am going to show him he can¹t be doing that!’ So he strides confidently into Joe’s office, slaps him across the face and snatches Joe¹s money out of his hand.

As he returns to the group, he says, ‘That will teach him not to be so rude!’

Understandably, Joe is completely perplexed! HOW DARE THEY???? All this time, they have done everything for me whenever I wanted and never asked for anything in return and now one of them has attacked me for NO REASON!

Joe comes rushing out of his office, confronts Rex and demands his money back. Rex says ‘NO. Mary told me you were rude to her and this is your punishment.’

Joe is beside himself! This just doesn¹t make sense! Rex must have lost his mind and has become dangerous! Doesn¹t he remember that I am the Boss???

Rex approaches Joe again and points a finger at him. Joe is still in shock from being slapped and having his property stolen from right under his nose and feels that this is the start of another attack!

Joe is not about to be pushed around by the guy that empties his garbage and shines his shoes! So, Joe slams his fist into Rex’s mid-section and Rex falls to the floor in agony.

Everyone in the office runs to the conference room and locks the door behind them. There is much lamenting of ‘OH MY! Joe has turned on us! Joe is EVIL! We have to get him out of here!’

They call the Police and Joe is soon taken away in handcuffs, claiming he was only acting in self defense. Everyone in the office is in tears. They can’t understand why all their hard work in getting Joe to like them failed. Maybe Joe was just a bad guy from the start and things will be different if they hire someone else….

If this story sounds ridiculous to you…and it SHOULD, consider the way we treat our dogs…

Many Canines spend their lives wondering what their ‘job’ is and never really know. We give them everything for free and don¹t allow them to feel pride in a job well done or the sense of security they get from knowing their place in our pack . We have systematically shown them from day one that we are their doormats that can be bossed and manipulated into doing their bidding. Then we blame the dog when it all goes wrong.

Most dogs are extremely BORED! They come up with behaviors to burn the excess energy mother nature gave them to survive as a species since they haven¹t had servants until the fairly recent history of canids…

Most of the activities dogs come up with will be found unacceptable to humans, like excessive barking, digging, escaping, destroying our property by inappropriate urination/marking and/or chewing, showing aggression toward humans or other animals, and even biting the hand that feeds them.

For these transgressions, most dogs are physically punished in the name of ³discipline², given away, abandoned, chained to a tree, or even euthanized. It’s sad, but many people feel that pets are expendable and easily replaced.

The number one reason for owners relinquishing their pets to animal shelters is ³Behavior Problems².

I wish just once the reason on the cage card at the pound would read, ‘We let our dog down and we never taught him what was expected of him.’

What are shoes for?

biancatatumshoesWell, according to Tatum and Bianca, shoes are definitely for chewing on! You just gotta love Bianca’s face in this picture, don’t you? What a silly smiling girl she is, all happy with her shoe. These are my husband’s shoes.. and you know we are nutty about dogs when the first thing we do when they get our shoes is to take a picture. Instead of taking the shoes away.

It was just so cute. I’m pretty sure Tatum got the first shoe, and Bianca the second shoe. Such beautiful girls. Don’t worry, I took the shoes away from them and replaced them with an appropriate toy. But you know, things that they can’t have are so much more interesting.

And oh my gosh… how cute! Tatum and Bianca were playing, and then sitting with each other, and then Tatum started to howl! Such a pretty, clear soft howl. Wow.. I love to hear dogs howl. My only other dog that will howl is Levi.

My Nice New Blinds!

Blinds So check out my new blinds! I love them. I’m going to redo my spare bedroom.. it was the computer room / office, but I finally cleaned it out and now it’s a real bedroom. I want to paint the walls (not sure what color yet) and buy a Wardrobe so we have more clothing storage space, and make it into a nice bedroom. Now it’s just a so so bedroom.

MeBlindsSo I got these Blinds from the Blinds Chalet, and they are amazing. They are real wood, and I love the color. Their quality is excellent and all the hardware is easy to use and set up. I really like them.

The dogs like this room because they never go in there unless I’m with them. And they were a bit interested in the blinds, but not so much. They like the treat storage better. I have doggie sheets on the bed, and a lamp next to it, to make it all homey. Heck, with the nice new blinds, I want to make it my own room…

Uploading Videos

Today I am uploading videos to YouTube. Actually, I just bought, and am downloading, Roxio. I really need a good video editor and creator, and from what I have read Roxio and Nero are the two most popular, and best. I like the specs of Roxio so I bought it. So I should be able to burn some nice DVDs of all these videos. I should send some to Hudson’s old foster mom, too, and Bianca’s. :)

Here is Chase playing with Tatum and Bianca. I’m so glad to see Chase playing!

Admitting….

Okay, I’m slowly admitting to myself that we are going to keep Tatum the Tater Tot Terror. I took her, Wednesday evening, to an informal training some of the girls have in a local park. I want her to get used to different situations. She will, in time. It will take time. I want her to know that everything is safe, and I don’t want to push her too hard. But I want to push her a little bit. So finding the balance is key.

And she recovers really well after our excursions outside. Wednesday she was cautious for about 45 mins. She let people pet her fine, though she doesn’t really respond to people (the only thing that is not ideal about her). She responds to dogs better. But that’s okay, we will build our relationship as slowly as she likes. She loves dogs, and after 45 minutes she was letting go… and then started playing with Daniel, a cattledog friend of our. So I put her on the 30 foot long line and let her go and romp and do her bunny rabbit dance.

So she really settled in, which was great. I guess the professional trainers would not let her have much dog contact, they would recommend I leash her to me and spend lots of time bonding with me. But I couldn’t do that. I’ll let it come in it’s own time.

This evening I get a break, everyone is chewing bully sticks and they are being nicely quiet. I’m watching my Friday evening TV shows… Gonna go watch Flash Gordon.
