Watching TV with the Pack

Sitting here watching Fantastic Four, Rise of the Silver Surfer that I got on Netflix. Good show! And it’s just funny to watch all the dogs. Levi is guarding a toy he took from Tony. Tony wants attention. Chase is on the couch showing his teeth every time Tony comes by (I know I know I said Chase is not allowed on the couch anymore.. ugh). Tatum and Bianca were upstairs playing for an hour, but now they are down here with us. Tatum took about five minutes to fix up her blankets and now she is napping.

Lucy brings me toys because she wants something to chew on, and Angel is just sleeping.

What a crew we have. They are all so unique and individual, and I love them all.

Shy Tatum

I have been taking Tatum out a lot to socialize her. I took her, today, to the Course A’Lure so she would get used to being around activities and people. I take her out Wednesday evenings to our informal training sessions we have with some friends. And I take her to flyball practice on Sundays.

She’s getting fairly comfortable at flyball and on Wednesday nights. She’s starting to take treats, and she loves playing with the other dogs.

She still doesn’t really know what treats are for. At the Humane Society they had a pet psychic there, Patty the Pet Psychic. I have heard good things about her and she was having short sessions for a very reasonable price. Patty basically confirmed my suspicions about Tatum. Tatum doesn’t really recognize humans. She has had no good human experiences. Humans have been negative and unpredictable to her. She doesn’t look into a human’s eyes. She doesn’t know anything about human signals or emotions.

Patty said that extreme happy emotion and situations can shut her down or freak her out just as much as extreme negative emotion and situations. And to just keep everything really calm. So I think I won’t be trying to engage her in really excited play with me. Patty said Tatum is like she’s almost autistic. But it’s not a mental defect, it’s behavioral. And I am confident that we will get around this and Tatum will learn to recognize me as a good thing and will be able to give me eye contact in the future.

Tatum does know dog behavior, emotion and signals very well, though. She is very dog savvy, and she likes to play and gets along with other dogs. I will still be taking her out to dog events for a long time, so she knows that there will be something there for her.

Now she is sleeping in her crate. When we got home she started going after Bianca, which is a sign of stress in her. And to prevent this from escalating I am enforcing down time. She doesn’t know how to settle herself down, so I, as her guardian and her instructor in living in a human world, am doing it for her.

I still adore Tatum. I found she loves liver, so I cooked some up and we use that for training treats. Thanks to my friend Astrid who is coaching me on how to cook the darn stuff! (I can screw up a box of cake, no kidding.)

Tatum is already more relaxed outside the home than she was 2 weeks ago. Tomorrow we go to flyball, then Sunday I might take her to agility practice. Not quite sure if I’ll take her Monday, she really might need a down day and I don’t want to push her too much.

So that’s the update about Tatum. I want to blog about her, because in a year or two I won’t remember what she was like. My husband will, though, he remembers everything! ;)

Fortunately neither Tatum nor I are so nervous we need incontinence products to help us through tough situations. But sometimes people do, and it is a legitimate concern.

Course A’Lure

Today I went jogging with the boys. Oh I so like jogging in the cooler weather, and so does Levi. Chase just likes jogging. I’m finding relaxation in jogging so I am going again, which I am very happy about!

Then this afternoon Chase, Tatum and I went to try out some Course A’Lure. Actually only Chase did the Course A’Lure and he had a super good time! He loves chasing that darn lure. He wasn’t as fast as another dog we know, but he was very fast! He got to do it twice.

They were having a dog day at the Humane Society today. They had Course A’Lure, and they had a flyball demo that my old flyball team did. I watched a bit, was fun. Chase was upset that he wasn’t able to participate. :)

It was a fun day. I’m going to write a separate post about Tatum’s training progress.

Maybe they will do Course A’Lure in Florida… if so, maybe I’ll buy some Tampa real estate!

NDF2

Well, I’ve been getting tired of figuring out calcium/potassium balances again with the dogs. The bone/meat ratio, to be more simple. So I went off searching for the old Volhard NDF formula.

I found that it is no longer being sold on the website it was being sold on. Now it’s being sold through Handcraft Collars.

And I see there is a new type of NDF? Natural Diet Foundation, dehydrated, just add meat. NDF2 is really just add meat. NDF you add veggies and herbs and kefir and things. But in NDF2 it is all supposed to be included and you just mix with some water.

So I’m going to try it. When I gave Tatum some of the AM Porridge a week or 2 ago, she really didn’t like it! Which was kinda funny. It has all the grains. The first four love the AM Porridge.

Commenting is Fudged

Ugh. For some reason when you comment here, it will tell you you already commented. It’s doing it to me, too. So I was going back and hitting comment again, but then it’d double comment.

I’m going to have to look at what is going on. I swear I haven’t changed the layout recently at all. So I apologize in advance. If you get the message that you already said that, just ignore it because your comment most likely did take. :)

Dogs in the Kitchen!

We have a super tiny kitchen. When seven dogs and two people all try to fit into the kitchen, it can get dangerous. Literally. Chase has space issues so we have to watch it. But it’s been going okay. Having so many dogs is why I’ve been putting off getting the kitchen remodeled. But I was out furniture shopping the other day and oh boy, they had some nice small kitchens!

Once the kitchen is remodeled we are going to get a really nice Delta faucet. Their website has a nice buying guide and info center. They have a great selection, great prices, and fast delivery! So when we get our kitchen, I’m going to get some really nice faucets.

Jogging Again

I’ve started jogging again, and taking Chase and Levi with. Chase loves jogging. We don’t go even close to far enough for him. I might take them to the park today… Sugarhouse Park, to see how that goes. We need a change of scenery and it’s only about 5 minutes from our house.

Well, I need a change of scenery. The dogs just like to sniff everything, and pee on everything.

Eventually I’ll start swapping out Tatum and Levi to go jogging. Tatum has much more energy than Levi. But Levi needs the exercise to keep his fitness and endurance up. He’ll be 8 next month, so in the next couple of years he might slow down to the point where jogging for 4 or so miles will be too much for him. Tatum, however, is young and I’m not sure that her growth plates are even completely closed, so she won’t be going for a little bit.

Solar

Maybe being a dog person is part of my environmentalism.. I consider myself, proudly, to be a tree hugger. I recycle, I try to minimize my impact on the earth… reduce, reuse, and onward. I would absolutely love to convert our house, or at least add to our house, to solar energy. I feel connected to the earth somehow. I love camping, being outdoors, and letting the dogs run and be who they really are.

There is a BP Solar Decathlon happening in only two days. If you are interested in solar power for your house, or building a new house powered by solar power, you will want to check this out. The world is changing and we are draining the Earth’s resources too quickly. We need renewable power and solar power has come a long way in the last decade or less.

The Decathlon site will have regular updates, and you can even vote for your favorite solar home. Come join the discussion. For the Earth, and future generations of dogs (okay and people too) we need to use renewable energy!
