Hey Jen. this is my first real go at serious obedience training, so I do what my trainer tells me, and eventually I can see what else works. :) The stick is good because you can move it in and out to get the dog's position right, so their butt isn't too far out, or too far in. And they learn to really focus on that stick that is stuck in my watch band. We are weaning off the stick and the treat now, Chase doesn't quite understand that though! Levi is pretty good at it.

hahaha... senior living! My dogs naturally picked up heal... I was VERY lucky. Now if their off leash recall "outside" of the fence was better, I'd be in pretty good shape.

Lora's last blog post..Yves Saint Bernard

You teach heeling so differently than I do. In Volhard, we use the snap around collar and hold the leash in control position. Passive use of the leash is what tells the dog where to be.. that and of course my voice and praise.

If the dog goes to far out, the leash gets tight and they "check" themselves. Not painful, just a physical indicator of them being to far out. Of course, some dogs need different training methods.. I never learned to teach with a cookie on a stick.. interesting method.

Fuzzy Logic's last blog post..Finding the Divine in a Frog
