Muffit the Muppet

6 February, 2008 (16:26) | Daily Posts, Muffit, Rescue | By: User ImageCynthia [My Barks!]

Muffit! This is Muffit. Okay, his name started out as Wheatie, and then he came to live with us for a while as a foster boy. And for some reason, I just wanted to call him Muffit! Remember Muffit, the mechanical dog from the original Battlestar Galactica? Well, yup, that’s what I like to call him.

But then he went to his new home and they named him Shiloh. We fostered him for CAWS, and they are a great rescue organization. They did follow up calls, made sure all was well. I even saw Shiloh at an agility demo about a year and a half ago.. and he was running around and looked happy and I was glad to see him. It was pure luck.

Well, while I was in Los Angeles at the Clicker Expo, my husband got a call from CAWS. Poor Muffit had been dumped at the Humane Society of Utah. Not only that, the HSU didn’t scan him for a chip for two weeks! So now he is sitting next to me on the couch and he has a nasty cold. His breathing is labored. He’s super skinny, and when he came back to us his poop was complete liquid and crimson with blood. The vet thinks it was stress induced colitis. He’s on antibiotics.

He is not eating too well yet, I’ve tried raw, kibble, canned, cottage cheese.. and he just kinda picks at his food. He’s getting some down, though.

Poor guy. He’s only 26 pounds and needs to gain at least 5 to be healthy. My husband really wants to keep him. It makes us furious, and breaks our hearts, that this poor boy ended up at the shelter. The excuse was the family had to move and couldn’t take him with. The contract says, and the adopters say over and over, you return to him to the rescue! Not dumping him in the shelter! We are furious.

Well, he is safe and happy now. He might just stay here for a while.. or forever… he would make a great flyball dog. :) I wish we could give him something for his cold symptoms.

I can’t wait to meet him. He looks so cute.
Does he get along with the others or are you keeping him seperated until he feels better?

Hey Astrid, he is a doll. And he gets along with everyone, even Chase. Chase won’t play with him yet, but Chase is giving very appropriate signs that he isn’t ready to play. Though Muffit really wants to play with Chase. I’d bring him Saturday but I think he needs to rest and get better for a while.

I have a stream of profanities at the tips of my fingers right now.. but I’ll refrain for the sake of your blog.. but WTF is wrong with people?!

Try feeding vitamin C for his cold… also there is something to be said for fasting when we are healing… offer water with honey in it… or chicken broth… he may just want his body to heal up before he starts putting the poundage back on.

As much as I’m not a commerical dog food fan sometimes the stinkier the better… I’m not above hand feeding canned dog food.

If his colitis doesn’t clear up, let me know.. I’ll send you some Yucca Intensive. It’s an herbal antiinflamitory that did wonders for a friends Bulldog who suffers from stress induced colitis.

If you need some Vitamin C lmk. We can meet and I will give you some crystals (buffered with calcium). 1/4 teaspoon will equal 1000 mg.

I dunno what is wrong with people Jen… they piss me off too. No excuse for dumping him, none at all. I will try the broth and honey and see if he will take those. He is eating a little bit… but not really enough to gain weight. But yeah his body is probably taking care of itself.

Is he a BC Mix? He is cute. Maybe he needs some probiotics with his food???? I am not a vet but it helps my dogs.
This is why I prefer dogs to people :-) When I lived in Hawaii military people leaving the island routinely dumped there dogs at the Humane society or worse just left them to fend for themselves grrrr…………

Hi Julie.. yeah he’s a BC mix. Not sure what he’s mixed with.. but he’d be a great agility dog. :) If we keep him, I’ll probably just do flyball with him. I don’t think I can afford entering 4 dogs in agility (Chase Levi Tatum Muffit).. how do you do it? LOL.
