Running After Agility

Jet and Chase

I love letting the dogs run after a day of agility. This is from Sunday, the day I left Tatum home. So I just let Chase and Jet run a little bit. Chase always gets the Frisbee when these two run together. If it’s just Jet, then Jet will bring me the Frisbee back. :) Chase is a bit pushy and possessive, though.

These boys don’t need any fat burner pills, they run around enough to burn off a lot of calories. I get to just sit and throw for them. LOL.

I think I need a smaller Frisbee for Jet.  This one is so big that his face is hidden behind it when he gets it.  It’s goofy.  :)   This is perfect for Chase, though.  And letting Chase stretch his legs after a day of agility is a good release. It might sound odd, since he ran agility all day, five runs, but this is more free and relaxed, where agility is much more structured.

I love to watch them run!

Tatum Did Agility!

Yay! Tatum did agility! I’m so excited! She did great! She exceeded all my expectations. I kept saying I didn’t really think she was ready, but I was wrong! She’s ready! Well, she’s still pretty darn slow, LOL, but I hope speed will come with time and confidence. I entered her in ASCA agility, prenovice, and I jumped her at 16 inches. There’s no teeter or weaves in prenovice. She can do the teeter, but not the weaves yet, so that was good.

I felt like I was cheer leading her quite a bit, LOL. A lot more than I wanted to. But all in all that’s okay for now. She did all the obstacles in all four of her runs. She had two runs on Saturday and two runs on Monday. I left her home on Sunday so she could rest, she isn’t all that high stamina of a girl! Maybe a testosterone booster would help speed her up a little bit… LOL

ButI was thrilled with how she was. She’s my baby girl, that goofy smooth collie who has come such a long way from when she came to us from the hoarder in Houston, Texas. I’m proud of my girl.

Picking A Venue

I took Chase to an ASCA Agility trial last weekend. It was three days, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I think Chase did really well. And I didn’t do too bad myself. :) I’ve been toying with the idea, lately, of picking a venue with Chase and pursuing a high level title. A Trial Championship. And ASCA has been one of my two favorite options.

After looking around the web last night I think that there are enough ASCA trials around that I can get him in at least six this year. Since I’m going to the World Dog Show 2010 in June in Denmark this year, that’s going to zap a lot of my leave at work. Or else I could probably do more ASCA Agility. But next year, 2011, Chase will just be 7, and we can get really serious about picking up the legs that we need.

This is Chase’s Elite Jumpers run from Monday. We did good! We got 4 Qs out of 14 runs, which breaks down to 28%. Much, much better success rate than we’ve ever had in AKC or USDAA. So I want to pick a Venue that we are successful in… because why set ourselves up for failure? That isn’t a good idea in any area. And maybe if I keep running him in ASCA, I’ll learn how to run him in those flowing fast courses and we’ll get even better. I can hope, anyway, right?

My other choice was DOCNA, but there are not as many DOCNA trials as there are ASCA that I can get to realistically. And I enjoy ASCA. I always have. And we have such an awesome Australian Shepherd crowd here in Utah. And I have a friend in Colorado I can stay with when I go there…. so, ASCA it is.

Chase is so fast… in that Jumpers run he ran it in 21.3 seconds, 5.95 yards per second. That is dang fast. Sometimes I think he needs an energy auditor to keep him in check! He’s hard for me to handle at that speed, but I can do it, I am learning how. And I never put turning into his foundation agility work, so we lack that skill. ASCA needs other skills. You still have to call off obstacles and turn, even at speed, which really is a whole other skill set, and not really that easy, either. So… there’s an ASCA trial in Colorado over Memorial Day Weekend. I’m going to plan on that. It’s four days, which is a huge bonus for traveling, too.

So wish us luck! Hopefully Chase will come out of this with an ASCA ATCH! We have four years before he’s 10 to accomplish it.

Agility Weekend ASCA

Tatum

Tatum

Well we are gearing up for a three day ASCA trial this weekend. I hope to get some video. I MUST get video of Tatum! She’s in Pre-Novice and I’m now nervous about running her! It’ll be just for fun, I don’t think she’s ready really, but pre-novice will be pretty darn easy and it’ll be fun to see how she does.

I’ll probably work some volunteer jobs like I usually do. Hopefully I’ll get to sit around too, since I still don’t feel 100% from being sick. Oh well, I hope I get by okay and don’t feel completely awful next week

Been doing some training today and now I’m already tired.I hope Tatum isn’t too tired tomorrow. She’s a pretty low stamina girl and gets grumpy at the other dogs when she’s tired. She’s a goof.

Chase is entered in everything… five or six runs a day I think. My ankle has been giving me some problems lately too so I hope it holds up as well. Bleh. Sucks getting old!

Sits and Downs

Tatum Stays

So I’m working Sits and Downs with Jet and Tatum. As well as signals with Chase… which is similar, for utility obedience, but it’s all hand signals and no verbals. I want them all to have good verbals as well as hand signals. Their sits and downs are great on their own, but when I try to mix them up in the same training session then they tend to have more difficulty.

A friend of mine recommended these Training Levels to follow. It’s a training program to help a dog get to competition level without so many holes in their training like so many dogs have (yes, including mine).  So I’m starting with Level 1 and I’m working on Sit and Down.

I like to train these things in the same session.  I use a clicker, and I like to lure and capture behaviors.  But when I lure, say, the down, then I throw in a sit after a bit, neither Jet nor Tatum really listen, they just keep offering the down.  So I have to lure the sit a couple times, while saying the verbal.  This seems to remind them to pay attention to my voice as well as my hand signals or they won’t get the click and treat.

Jet, of course, is faster at picking things up than Tatum is.  She’s not the sharpest tool in the shed.  :)   But she is understanding. So earlier today I took 5 minutes out of my work-from-home day and trained them each.

Jet is understanding my verbals, I’d say, 90% of the time now when I switch between the Sit and the Down verbals.  Tatum is understanding, maybe 70% when I switch between the sit and down verbals. And I stand stationary, keeping my hands behind my back, so that I’m not giving them any unintentional physical cues.

Soon I think I’ll be ready to throw in the stand. They both know the hand signals, but not the verbals as much. So I’ll have to work verbals for a while so they know what the cue means.  Well, verbals with some hand signals and switching off so they know what Stand means. :)   Though Stand isn’t in the Training Level 1… it’s just something that I do, working the sit, down and stand together as it’s a good utility exercise for the dogs to know. It is probably in one of the higher levels.

With Chase I’m working the hand signals. And he’s getting pretty good at them, though today he was slipping a bit on the tile floor and didn’t want to down. So I put in the verbal with the hand signal on the down and that seemed to help him a lot.

Such good dogs.  It’ll be so nice to have clear sits, downs, and stands… I think my dogs have always been a bit confused by them. :p But I’ve never taken the time to teach them this clearly!

Edit… here is the journal entry I’ve started for Tatum (though I didn’t know it was just Tatum at the time and so put Jet’s info in there too): Training Levels Journal

Sick and Guilty

Bleh, I have been sick since last Wednesday and I’m feeling guilty about not working with the dogs as much as I want to. So here they are all hogging the couch. :)

The Couch

I know that they are, really, just fine having a few days off… maybe I’m starting to feel better and so I want to work more now, but I still feel rotten enough that I’d rather sleep all day. I need some Costa Rica vacations, maybe they would settle me down and heal me up…

I just have a bad cold. Not the flu. The flu would take me out for a week and I’d feel all weak and awful. I just have a head cold and stuffy nose and achy joints and stuff. I am pretty sure it’s not the flu. I’m glad it’s not the flu!

Well I hope I get better for ASCA agility next weekend. I have Tatum entered in pre-novice, scary! Now I’m getting nervous about it!

Pretty Tatum

Just saw this picture of Tatum and had to post it up. She is so pretty!

Angel Is Doing Okay

Angel, Jet, Tatum and Muffit

Well, just a wee update on Angel. She is doing pretty good. She is old, for sure, and very slow. I wish we could do more for her but there’s no cure for old age. Ugh. She goes slow everywhere, but she eats really well, potties outside just fine, and likes to chew on pig ears.

She doesn’t play much anymore… she does sometimes, but I have to keep Jet away because he will pull toys and socks right out of poor old Angel’s mouth. She doesn’t have the strength or the attitude to get toys away from Jet. And Jet doesn’t understand that Angel needs gentle play now.

Maybe when it warms up we can get some outdoor fireplaces and sit outside with her and relax. She loves it outside. But it’s a bit too cold now and so we keep her inside except to potty. She is a good girl and she’s hanging in there are we love her very much.
