Chase the Puppy!

Do you play Chase the Dog at your house? Most dogs love this game… where they get to run and you chase them all over the place.

As a general rule I don’t play Chase the Puppy. The only dog I’ve played this game with is Angel. Mostly because she gets so very excited. Her ears go back and she wiggles her whole body. She grabs clothes out of my closet, usually a sock, and runs and I chase her. She doesn’t destroy the sock.. but even if she did, they are cheap dog toys. 🙂 She has so much fun. She usually runs out the dog door to get away from me. But then she comes back in again for more fun. Levi will even chase her an nip at her, getting in on the fun.

Tatum so wants to be chased. Our collies don’t really play that much. Chase the border collie plays with her some, but doesn’t chase her around like she wants. So last night I started to chase her in the house.

Oh boy, she loved that! She put her ears back and her head down, just like Angel does, and got all excited and wiggly!

And so now, if I continue playing Chase the Tatum game, we will have to establish some rules. When I want her to come, she’s still gonna have to come. We will not play Chase the Tatum in the back yard when she needs to come in (we have never done this and she runs right inside when I open the door, all the dogs do).

I especially worry about her getting out and running away from me. If this happens EVER, we will stop playing Chase the Collie. Unfortunately, since I watched that poor little Iggy get hit by a car, now I see flashbacks of it, but I see my dogs getting crushed. Especially Tatum, for some reason. It’s being very disturbing.

But I cannot live in fear. I want to live in joy and love. And so we’ll see how this goes. 🙂

  1. Hmmm… we don’t play “Chase the Puppy” .. we play “chase the toy”.. I’ve been known to stalk the dogs when then have a toy and sort of build on the tug game…

I’ll bet if you add in recalls while chasing (as well as “drop it”) you would be fine.

  4. Chase the toy sounds like a great game. Tatum is still not too excited about toys but she’s getting better. And good idea about adding in recalls and drop its!

  6. Awe Cynthia… I wish you didn’t see that iggy get hit. You did the best you could for him and he is winking at you from the rainbow bridge.

As far as chase in the house.. I do it every once in awhile. There’s too many of them and they are too big to play too often. They get so worked up. Mine are good about understanding when I say enough is enough, they stop. But that didn’t happen overnight.

Hera brings me a toy and tries to get me to take it from her. That is usually how the “game” begins. Then the the zoomie freight train runs all over the house!

  9. We play chase the dog at our house, too, but only on rare occasions. Pepper, our dog, gets way too crazy. However, it’s good fun when we’re at my parents’ out in the country where there’s lots of room to run.

  10. How about – Tatum chases Mom? It’s great for fast recalls, etc. In the middle of “Chase Tatum” – turn around and run the other way! Works on my guys every time!

  11. We’ve got 14 dogs in the house right now, so anything as active and noisy as Chase The Puppy (or Toy) is out of the question. Considering how poorly some of our guys get along with one another, I suspect that there would be blood on the floor…and walls, etc. However, when we’re down to a reasonable number, it’s a great game to play. Once in a while, I’ll take one or two dogs out in the backyard and play Chase The Puppy with them. They loooooove it!

  14. Hmmm…I can see how such a game could backfire. Moxie doesn’t like to be chased, she’s the chaser. So we play chase mommy. Its not much fun though, because I run like a hippo. Is there a way to alter the game so that you switch out, you chase her, then she chases you. That might be a quick way to get her back if she ever did get outside.

  17. I’ve just come across your Blog via the “It’s the Dog’s Life” Blog…

I’m sorry to hear about your experiences with the Iggy – I witnessed a little Cavvy get hit by a car last summer – my husband stopped our car and I ran across the road to it but it lay there twitching and then was still – there was nothing we could do. It was horrific and I still get flashbacks now, including dreams about it happening to my own dogs.

I hope this gets better for you soon….

  20. Hey Julie I’m the same way. Went to the park yesterday and oh boy Tatum did not want to come. Frustrating! We need to work on that. Not sure about chasing her for fun for a while.

  21. Hi Charlotte, I get the flashbacks too… I wish they would go away. I didn’t know they twitched, that was awful to see. 🙁 I also get visions of it happening to my own dogs. Ugh.

  22. Ping Golf Clubs, they usually calm themselves down after a short bit. Or else I just get some treats out, that calms them right down. 🙂

  23. Hey Jim.. yeah, we have to be careful, and rough play is not allowed whenever we have a new foster, and for some time afterwards. Even now, I have to watch Tony and Chase, they don’t like each other.

  28. Chase is really the only game our puppy plays, can’t figure out how to teach him to bring things back. Does anyone have any advice?
    Thanks, great post
