A Sad Thing from the Flyball Tournament

I just have to post, briefly, about a sad thing that happened at the flyball tournament this past weekend. We love our dogs… and we know (I’d say all of us, but I guess I have to say most of us) that our dogs perform their best when they are happy and when they trust us humans.

When we were running (we are the Thunder Paws in Utah) we saw a member of another team, angry at his dog.. a red border collie, slam the poor dog into the wall. Not once… but three times. The poor dog was terrified. It was a very sad thing to see. The dog, and the person, were members of Atomic Dogs, a team from Las Vegas.

The judge had a word with him, and our captain talked to their captain. Their captain said that this man’s dogs do love him, and he treats them well… but I cannot believe that. If he is doing that in public, then what does he do at home? Actions like that should never, ever be tolerated. If someone on our team, new or not (he was new, they said) they would be told to leave, immediately, and never come back.

It would be best if we could keep the dog.
Ugh.

  1. I would have had to slam that person into the wall 2 or 3 times. I do not understand how people can abuse their animals like that. Some people just do not GET IT.

  2. You know for all the criticism you can level at the AKC, that is one thing they do well.

We had an incident at our all-breed show a few years back, nothing as bad as this. We, as the club, have to immediately convene the trial committee, who as as judge and jury. We make a recommendation to the AKC for action. In that case the person was suspended for life.

  4. People like this piss me off. I don’t care if you give your dog steak every night for dinner, the moment you abuse your animal, like this man did, you’re a few choice words!

  5. I totally did not see that. If I would of – uggg. Bet it was hard to not go off on the guy. He should have been ejected from the tournament and someone else run his dog. I am so glad the judge said something and the captains spoke. My only hope is that the captain of that team and other team mates ralley around that dog and take the man to task
Ugggg Makes me really said to hear that.

  7. hey Cyber… one of our teammates went over and told the guy that, and then he (our teammate) got in trouble for threatening him! Was dumb. I’m glad he said something. The guy had to have people say something, we can’t just let this go.

  9. I agree, B. Dogs deserve to be treated well. As Tatum chews up my stickers and bites me in the but… never, ever, does any of her puppy behaviors deserve yelling, hitting, or anything like that. NEVER! Dogs are under our care, and deserve the best.

  11. Heya Ann. a couple of our teammates were crying because of how awful it was. πŸ™ Very sad thing indeed. I thought it deserved a blog post, because that action tarnishes their whole team.

  15. Not sure why he wasn’t throw out. Must have been buddies with the judge. Was there a report filled out? The way to help fix this is to contact U-FLI and write them a letter of concern of how casual it was handled.

  19. Dogs are not property, they’re like kids. When your frustration level becomes unmanageable, you walk away; take a break. Bet the %#$& wouldn’t have slammed his kid’s head into the wall!

  22. Hey clicker Trainer… yeah, that is good, if a dog is being abused, the person just needs to be kicked out. That is a harsh ban, lifetime, but harsh is sometimes good for the dogs.

  24. That’s so horrible! The poor dog just wants to please him, not like he did anything wrong on purpose.. I don’t understand how people are so CRUEL.
