Quiet Before Tatum

We used to have such a quiet house. I could work from home, and the dogs would be mellow and snooze through the day. Waking up in the evening to get dinner, some chew bones, and play. Or training, of course, always training.

But now, with Tatum the Wild Child, there isn’t as much quiet. She will quiet down, but mostly she entices the other dogs to play. They run amok in the yard, run around like maniacs, and bark too, unfortunately for the neighbors.

Angel has a stick outside now, and even Tony is playing with Tatum out back. It’s cold out there, I can feel the cold come in from the dog door. But if I close it, the silly dogs will barrel head first into the closed door and maybe hurt themselves. So a little cold it will be.

Ah… I do love the excitement of Tatum, though. She is such a doll!

I Got In!

Woo Hoo I got into the flyball seminar! I’m so excited. My flyball caption, of Thunderpaws here in Utah, is also sending off her entry. I hope she gets in, too. If she does we’ll drive down together.. such a saver on gas. And share a hotel room.

I wish I could bring Tatum… but I don’t think they’ll be room in the car for her. I hope she doesn’t get mad. I’ll ask and see but… I’m so silly. I want to take her everywhere and do everything with her. I just adore her! It’s so weird, I’ve never connected with a dog so quickly before. Ever in my life. And she’s not a sweet innocent docile thing, either.. she’s a brat! She has such a sassy attitude. I can’t give her up! So it’ll bug me more than her if she can’t go. And there will be other times she can go.

So anyway, the folk got my entry and I have a working slot. Yay! I can’t wait until March 1st and 2nd to go!

This coming weekend I’m going to the Clicker Expo in Los Angeles. That will be fun too. Wish I could take a dog. Hope I’m not repeating myself as I’m so bad at remembering what I’ve already said. ;) Maybe I’ll leave home my chemises since the husband isn’t coming.

Chase the Puppy!

Do you play Chase the Dog at your house? Most dogs love this game… where they get to run and you chase them all over the place.

As a general rule I don’t play Chase the Puppy. The only dog I’ve played this game with is Angel. Mostly because she gets so very excited. Her ears go back and she wiggles her whole body. She grabs clothes out of my closet, usually a sock, and runs and I chase her. She doesn’t destroy the sock.. but even if she did, they are cheap dog toys. :) She has so much fun. She usually runs out the dog door to get away from me. But then she comes back in again for more fun. Levi will even chase her an nip at her, getting in on the fun.

Tatum so wants to be chased. Our collies don’t really play that much. Chase the border collie plays with her some, but doesn’t chase her around like she wants. So last night I started to chase her in the house.

Oh boy, she loved that! She put her ears back and her head down, just like Angel does, and got all excited and wiggly!

And so now, if I continue playing Chase the Tatum game, we will have to establish some rules. When I want her to come, she’s still gonna have to come. We will not play Chase the Tatum in the back yard when she needs to come in (we have never done this and she runs right inside when I open the door, all the dogs do).

I especially worry about her getting out and running away from me. If this happens EVER, we will stop playing Chase the Collie. Unfortunately, since I watched that poor little Iggy get hit by a car, now I see flashbacks of it, but I see my dogs getting crushed. Especially Tatum, for some reason. It’s being very disturbing.

But I cannot live in fear. I want to live in joy and love. And so we’ll see how this goes. :)

Christmas Day Collies

322

It’s Christmas Collie Day! Or, err… Christmas Day for the Collies. :) One or the other, or maybe both, even.

328

And my sister (human sister lol) and her son got the dogs some fun toys. One is a Christmas tree. The other is a rabbit that lost his head. And everyone knows that pulling the stuffing out of stuffed animals is the bees knees and really needs to be done. What is all that stuffing doing in there anyway?

325

And then they took the toys outside, and did some playing out there in the snow. I stood out with them and encouraged the play, which was fun. But it was only 15 degrees out there and I got cold pretty fast.

331

The cold doesn’t bother the dogs, though. Nope. In fact, they really like the cold. It gives them extra energy particles somehow and they have to zoom around the back yard in order to burn them off. Silly zoomies.

334

I like the picture of Angel, Chase and Tatum all tugging on the tree. Tatum is not a big tugger… yet. As soon as she realizes how fun it is, and that it’s okay to do, though, she’ll catch on. She likes tugging better with the other dogs than me.

337

Levi wanted to guard the pink bunny more than play. He loves to guard. He will gather up all the toys, or bones, in a pile and growl over them. I have to take them away, or pass them out to everyone so everyone has something. He is a silly collie boy. They are all silly collies, actually.

Right now they are chewing on rawhide bones, and having a good time doing so. I ordered bully sticks for them too, so they will have those as well. They do love to chew.

It is a fun day. Hopefully we won’t need a colon cleanse after all the goodies we are eating, though!

We hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas!

Dremmel and Squeeze Cheese are Gold!

Okay, I’m sold on the Dremmel. :) My dogs are already pretty good.. most of them, anyway. And so we are leaps and bounds above just starting a new dog on a Dremmel, or a puppy. And after I wrapped Christmas presents today, including volcom clothing, I decided that it was Dremmel time!

Okay so here is how it went today with each dog. Last night I exposed them all to it, today I thought what the heck, we’ll just dive right in.

Chase was first. He did great. His front feet are more sensitive than his back. I put squeeze cheese on his front legs and while he licked it off I Dremmeled. I actually clipped his nails first because they were a bit long. Then I used the Dremmel. He was very calm and licked his cheese, and I did all his nails. He was great! I suspected he would be, as he’s good for his nail trimming anyway.

Lucy was next. I figured she’d be good because she is a very resilient dog. She is tough and can handle a lot. So I put some squeeze cheese on her legs too, and Dremmeled. I clipped her a bit first to get them down, but I hope to not clip anymore after I get into Dremmel Maintenance. She did well. When food is involved, she always does well. :)
Levi was after Lucy. He also did good. He doesn’t like his toenails clipped but he usually lays stock still, then goes barking and yapping and running around after we are done. With the cheese, though, he was great. He also licked it off his legs and after we were done he got extra, and he didn’t do his nervous after-clip runs.

Angel I need help with and the Husband came to help. He didn’t like my putting the cheese on their legs, as it is kinda oily. But it occupies them. He put it on a DVD cover.. now I better hide that or the dogs will be all over it. :) And Angel was amazing. Usually the husband has to feed her dog food constantly while I clip. She didn’t mind the noise or feel of the Dremmel either, and she loved the cheese so much she didn’t hardly pull away. And with the squeeze cheese I can do most if it myself, which is nice.

Tony was after Angel, and he didn’t like me touching his feet much, so I gave him cheese on the DVD cover with the Dremmel running, and touched his feet. Gently bringing the Dremmel to his toes too. But I haven’t done this much with Tony so we didn’t do it long, and his toenails are not too long anyway.

Tatum was last. She hates hates hates her feet touched. She didn’t even want me to hold her feet to put squeeze cheese on them, and fought me about it. Until she realized that I was putting cheese on her feet. And then she was better. And with her, I just have to be a firm leader. Just like when my obedience instructor tells me when I walk her on a leash and we go say hi to someone, I have to walk with purpose and be firm. Instead of babying her. And the difference in her is pretty amazing when I walk with firm purpose. So with her feet, I just told her she’s going to have to deal with it and I was firm, and she was better. I put the cheese on her foot and held her foot while she licked it off. She stopped struggling then and was better. But still we have a ways to go with the foot handling with her. But I have to remember to be a firm leader with her. I want to baby her because she is so cute and puppy like, but she doesn’t need that from me. She needs a benevolent leader.

So I think that was a lot of success with the Dremmel! I will continue to use it and keep all 108 toenails nice and trimmed! (Man that’s a lot of toenails!)

That Darn Flyball Box

Okay I went to have Angel’s and Tatum’s toenails trimmed by our Thunder Paws Flyball Captain, and of course she sent me home with a practice flyball box. :)

It’s sitting in my front room and I haven’t, of course, used it yet. I want to really find out what I’m doing with the darn thing. Chase needs to get higher up on the box. She has taught her Jack Russel to bounce off the wall, literally! I think that’s an awesome idea. I need to get a carpet square or something and put it on the wall, then have Chase do that. Once i show him how, I know he’ll have no problem. That will get him WAY UP on the box, which is what I want. And without a jump prop in front.

As for Tatum, I don’t know, yet, how to start her out. I want to start her out right. So if you have any suggestions, please let me know! I have some ideas and I’ve gotten help from my team, and I’m always open for more ideas.

Creating a Favorite Toy

I love how Chase is a good tugger. He loves toys more than almost anything, and he loves tug. Using a game of tug as a reward is so nice, and gets him into higher drive, too.

Hol ee RollerTatum loves to play, but she is shy about playing with toys. She will kinda grab them for a minute but not for long. I need to get her used to the treat pouch tug that we have, and encourage her to tug more. I think for her it may be a dominance type thing where she is not so sure about tugging with me. She is starting to tug more with Angel and that is good, too. Gotta get her drive up and her playing up too.

Anyway I really love these round toys made of rubber called Hol-ee Rollers, but the dogs are not too crazy about them. So I really want to create this to be a favorite toy. I have two of them, they are great for tug, they are very tough, and if they get left outside in the snow and freezing rain they still survive an don’t even have to be put through the washing machine like tugs.

alley oopThe smooth blue collies are not big toy dogs. Angel is the most, but she is just our companion dog, not a sports dog. So now I have to learn how to make a toy fun and exciting, and interactive with me. For Tatum.

What I really want, too, is an Alley Oop, made by Gary Wilkes. But apparently they have been discontinued. I sent them an email seeing if maybe they will make them again, or if they have any left. What a great targeting tool it would be! And it never falls over, it’s made to stand straight up. I wish they still made them.

Fun on a Snow Day

177

Today it is snowing. And not just a little bit. It is dumping. It’s gorgeous as you can see. I was going to go to the USDAA agility trial (I am not entered) and work with Chase and socialize Tatum, but I don’t want to make that 20 mile drive in this kind of snow. Hopefully we can go tomorrow. No flyball for a while, now, since there is too much snow on the ground. We won’t be seeing any wedding flowers for a while.

174

The smooth collies have all been out playing in the snow, Tatum most of all. She has been soaking wet all day. I don’t think she ever saw snow in Texas (do they have snow in Texas?) and she was outside playing with anyone who would stay with her. Chase and Tony, mainly, though not at the same time. It was very cute to see her so wet!

180

We also did some training this morning with the collies and the border collie, and things are going so well! Lucy has found her calling. She thinks Find The Peanut Butter Under the Spoon is the best game in the world. Too bad she still limps off and on, doing Utility with her would be very fun. Well, she can learn a lot of it anyway. Chase did great with his spoons. And Tatum, I have realized, needs fewer spoons. Just two for now. Later we will add more. Obedience is a lot of fun to train. It is so challenging, and in a good way. We are using spoons to start training the Utility articles exercise where they have to sniff out the right dumbbell with my scent on it. It’s quite fun to do.

186

Tatum is really loving the mat work. I lay down her mat and she knows to go on it and she gets a click and a treat. Success! Something she likes to learn, and she is really starting to get the clicker training. Her sits are also good. Her spoons are okay, and we haven’t done much with wait yet. We need to work on that. We also practice targeting to a lid with a treat on it. I’ll need to get out a jump (if they thaw) and have her jump to a target.

So this is a good snow day all around. The dogs all chewed some bully sticks, and now it is rest time.

Angel is Slowing Down

170

It is sad, but true. Our sweet girl Angel who we adopted in March of 2002 is really slowing down. We didn’t know how old she was then, and we still don’t know how old she is now. For a while we were guessing she was about 8, and for many years she seemed to just stay 8, so I was hoping she would just always be 8 forever. But now that is not going to happen. :(
She is probably about 11 or 12 now, we are thinking. She still plays with Tatum and Chase, but she lays down a lot, is having a harder time going up and down the stairs, and likes to stay out in the cold more. Which is kinda odd.

It doesn’t matter how old she is. She came into our lives skinny and with a broken leg. She is now fat and happy (not really fat lol) and has warm beds to sleep on and fun walks to go on, and she spent many a night in our canvas tent on camping trips. But still.. I hope she has many years left with us.

Find Sniff

Last night I pulled out the metal spoons and I worked on metal articles with Chase and even Tatum. We start with spoons that have peanut butter on the underside. And Chase is very good at this. He sniffs each spoon and then when he finds the one with the peanut butter, I click and he gets to lick the peanut butter as we move out of the circle of spoons.

My trainer says I can do this 30 times a night because how hard is it, to have them sniff for PB? We didn’t do it 30 but we did it at least 10.

Tatum is still being cautious about working with me on her own. I tried to play with her last night too, to get her energy up a bit and that worked a little bit in the beginning. She is odd because she is not very enthusiastic about the treats. I need to make up some more liver today she likes that better. She is tentative still, and she kinda wanders around and tries to avoid me a bit. I’m sure she is still stressed and showing avoidance behaviors when I am alone with her. With the other dogs around she is fine with me and nips at me and entices me to play quite a bit.

When I play with her I grab at her feet and at her body, I play bow, and I move around silly with her. I try toys too and she usually will bite at my hands instead of the toy, but that’s okay I will redirect to the toys slowly so they are more fun. And she is playing tug with Chase and Angel so toys are becoming good things for her. At the hoarder where she lived for a year I’m sure there were no toys to play with, just other dogs.

My instructor also told me to try mat work with her, and she was really picking up on that. When she walked on the mat she got a click and a treat thrown onto the mat. She was starting to offer that very quickly. With sits and downs she still doesn’t offer very much, and I have to lure her. She starts her avoidance of wandering around the room and she is having a hard time offering behaviors that I can click and shape. I wonder what I can to to get her to feel more comfortable. Maybe I just need to work with her more.

After training is done I put the clicker, spoons, and treats away, some tool storage place would be nice for dog training devices as well. :)
