A Day at Agility Makes Tired Dogs

Levi SleepsWell, I took three dogs to agility today. Levi, who ran two runs and did great! I’ll get a video of him posted after I rip it off my DVD camcorder and upload it to YouTube. I was very proud of him. He did great both runs today and weaved on his Jumpers course, the first run. Got the entry, all the polls, and Qd! I was thrilled. He’s such a good boy. He did his think, on his standard run, where he got the entry but then skipped the next poll. I’ll show you in the videos in my next post. I didn’t see any other collies run, Levi was the only agility collie again!

Muffit Sleeps Muffit did really well, too! He is such a good boy. I think I’m getting a handle on what I need to do with him. We’ve only had him for three months, so even though he’s five years old (about) he’s had rotten training… well, no training, and so I’ll need to fix him. He does need to be exposed to the environments, but I do want to keep him under threshold. Where my tent is at the trial, we are far enough away so he can be quiet in his covered crate. And when I take him out, I can walk far from the other dogs, and wait until he gives me some attention. Then lots of treats and praise. And no rewarding hyper or frantic behavior. I think we will be getting a good handle on this soon. Someday I’ll take him with to some cheap hotels when we go travel. Now Muffit is happily sleeping next to me on the couch, he is very tired!

Tatum Sleeps And then, of course, there was Tatum. She is my baby doll princess girl. She is also dead tired. She did great again today, even more confident. We did some mat work by the agility ring. We went inside to where they were doing conformation and obedience. She was a little shy and nervous towards the end of the day when she was getting tired, but in the morning she leapt out of the car and was excited for the day.

It was a good trial, the courses were hard, but okay. The weather was actually fairly warm… not too windy. Got a bit cold once in a while, but was okay. Hopefully it won’t rain or snow tomorrow, dangit. It usually is nasty weather at this trial, so since it’s not raining or snowing or blowing freezing cold wind is just a good thing!

One more day tomorrow. I’ll see about Levi’s weaves again, maybe he’ll get one more!

Trying this Control Unleashed Thing on Muffit

Muffit So the new big hit in the dog sport, behavior, and training world is Control Unleashed by Leslie McDevitt. It’s a book, and the author has also been doing seminars around the country. She is coming here to Salt Lake City, Utah, in October of this year. She started her program by teaching classes to humans and their dogs in order to help the dogs calm down, focus, and work smarter.

I am reading her book. She has a lot of good points. There is a lot of trouble in the dog sport world, especially in agility now, where dogs are pretty darn wild and out of control. They don’t focus very well, and they have been coined ‘train wrecks’ a time or two. This can be dangerous, too. Especially if a dog falls off the dog walk in uncontrolled haste to get to the other end. Or the A-Frame, or flies off the teeter unsafely. In agility, not only do we want speed, we want control and accuracy. A balance of these things are critical for a fun, safe sport.

Anyway, so I have been taking Muffit to some dog events to get him used to the situations. However, he is very overstimulated. He is frantic. Especially when he sees other dogs. He doesn’t pay much attention to me, and he’s quite unable to focus on anything but the other dogs. He is nice to them, he just wants to say hi to all of them. And when there are 80+ dogs there, that’s pretty impossible.

So I’m about half way through Control Unleashed. I guess I don’t really get the passive exercises. Either that, or I find them boring. But the theory is, as I understand it, to teach the dog to be able to relax and be calm. Because a calm dog can think. And learn. And then transport this calmness to other situations.

Muffit CampingSo Muffit and I sat on our mat today and I stroked him, rubbed his ears, and did some TTouch on him. He relaxed and seemed to like it. Then we got up and did some sits and downs and shakes, things he knows really well. He did get pretty excited when he was doing these and would paw at me and be cute. And I know he loves to learn and clicker train, and I really want to give that to him, too. So I’m not sure if I should practice calming exercises and teach him things in the same training session, or different training sessions. But I really, really don’t want to stop clicker training him. He works just fine at home, he is learning the jump for flyball, and the spring over and back over the jump, and he likes it. And he’s not frantic.

I guess it’s hard for me to see moving the calming exercises from inside the boring house, to outside. If we do this and get good at it, then i move outside… if a dog walks by he still, I think, will get frantic. I’m not sure. But if he does get frantic, we would go inside (remove him from the situation) and then do some calming exercises to calm him down again. And see what distance he can take from another dog before he gets too excited, barking and jumping and pulling at the leash. Then always keep him under that threshold.

I will try this and see what happens. I’m impatient, I will admit it, and want quicker results than this. So I’m asking lots of opinions on what I should do with Muffit. I want him to be happy and calm and well adjusted. Which he is not.. yet. He is happy and calm at well adjusted at home, and he does love walks, but the stimulating environments of flyball and agility are a bit much for him… as a border collie he has a lot of energy, and I will work with that. And I think he has some Australian Shepherd in him, too. It’s sad that we got this broken dog we now have to fix. And he’s about five years old. Poor guy. but we’ll fix him up, no doubt!

He’s different from the collies. I’m glad that Tatum, although she’s frightened in new situations, she is not frantic and she’s pretty much able to think.

Like I have said in the past, it’s really hard for me to learn from a book. But I will try. And I will keep talking to people about all this, too.

Making The Bed Is Hard

MakingTheBed Sometimes making the bed is just a hard thing to do. Especially with these three helpers. They mean well… okay, they mean to play. :) But they are sweet and very much fun, they make bed making quite exciting!

With these three helpers I sure don’t need any alcohol rehab to get me through the day.. but I might need dog rehab. LOL.

Unfortunately Tatum now thinks that making the bed is a cue to play. But I can’t resist her, and then can’t resist the rest of the dogs joining in. Sometimes all six dogs are on the bed playing. I just have to scoot them all out into the hallway and close the door in order to actually do any bed making, but it’s fun, nonetheless!

Still Tired from Camping

Muffit Dig Today, I am happy to say, the dogs are still pretty tired from camping. Yay! :) Though they did play some when I got home, they are mostly still sleepy and resting a lot. And Levi isn’t even complaining about being on the couch, which is, actually, quite odd.

This is a cute picture of Muffit checking out the hole that Chase was digging. Chase must have really loved digging for the gophers down in Richfield when we were visiting! When we went down there I didn’t get us any travel health insurance, but we didn’t really need any.

Lucy And Lucy did great camping, too. She is getting a bit old, and a bit slower… she is 9 now, but she had a good time. She often found shady spots. But she did run around with the younger dogs a bit, too. I am sad that she is getting older… I keep telling her she is not allowed to get any older, but dangit, it’s not working. I love my Lucy girl, she is the oldest of the pack now. She is our cornerstone. We will be taking her back to the vet later this month for another xray, to see if she really does have cancer or not. We sure hope not.

Muffit and Me

Muffit And Me

My husband took this picture when I was taking a nap on the couch with Muffit. He is such a sweet boy, all curled up by my head. I knew he was there when I went to sleep. And I do like to snuggle with the dogs. And yup, I can sleep like this just fine!

Muffit Likes to Burrow

Muffit On The Bed Muffit is such a cute boy. Apparently he likes to burrow himself under the blankets… then scratch scratch scratch himself a bed so it’s comfy, then snuggle in. This is a very cute picture of him on our downstairs bed after he’s moved the blankets over himself.

I’m a bit worried about him… he drinks a lot, and pees a lot. What can be a cause of that? Diabetes? I’m going to ask the vet next time we go in, which will be pretty soon as our dogs are due for checkups. No vaccinations, though, just titers!

Four Very Tired Dogs

Me and Dogs on the Couch Yes… three dogs and one human do fit on a couch. Although barely!

Today I took four of our six dogs to flyball practice. It was fun. :) Chase already knows it and does a great job.

Levi.. I’m going to train him up, because he would have fun even if he isn’t fast. He should learn pretty quick. He went away from me just fine toward the box loader who had some treats, but on the way back he didn’t go over the jumps. He went by them! I thought that was odd. So I know what I have to work on with him.

Tatum is catching on to the jumping, she is such a good girl! I was so proud of her! We had her on just the jumps, and I put a lid and treat out on the other side of the jump like we have been doing at home. And she knew it! She went over the jump and got the treat like a pro! Then we did two jumps… then three! And she got them all! But on the way back… she came back to me but then ran off again and bunny hopped around the park again. LOL she is such a goon. I just adore her. I gave other people treats and she went to them, too, though, which was excellent. I want her to learn to go to people because people are good, not mean. No one is going to grab her collar anymore and drag her. Poor dear. I was just glowing I was so proud of her.

And Muffit.. he is too overwhelmed by the whole environment and just needs to be there for a while and get used to it and distress. Poor guy, he pooped in his crate. Realistically I should only bring him, and I should start really far away from the dogs so he can focus on me and think. He gets too excited and stressed to think. I was hoping he would be better than he is. But he’ll learn. He’ll be okay. I have faith. I knew Tatum would come around, and I know Muffit will, too.

All the dogs are sleeping now.. except Lucy. My Husband didn’t take her for a walk today, so she wants a bone. But if I give her one, all the dogs will wake up and the dynamic will change. And so she gets to just relax today and let the other dogs sleep. And I get to watch TV, fiddle with my HDMI switches on my HDTV, and veg. Flyball is tiring!

Flyball Practice Pics

Flyball Dogs Here’s a crowd of dogs at flyball practice… you can see Chase and Tatum in the background in their x-pen. And Muffit in his crate. I had him in the pen but… silly boy jumped out, he was too excited. So he got the crate (did I mention I got that crate for free? Driving by a house it was set up in the yard with a be FREE sign on it. Score! Perfect size, double door foldable wire crate. Destiny…).

Whatsit So anyway we had fun at flyball practice today. I love taking pictures as much as I love running Chase. This is a picture of Whatsit… yup, that’s his name! I love his name, cute as a bug… both him and his name. Not sure what his mix is, but he’s loved by our flyball captain (okay he’s loved by everyone, but he lives with her). He tries his best to do flyball but doesn’t manage to bring the ball back. Goof! :)

Fixing the Broken Dogs

I tend to wonder what my rescue dogs would be like if I had gotten them, socialized them, and trained them from puppies. Tatum is the one I wonder about the most. I think she would be a complete confident terror if I would have gotten her at 12 weeks old from a responsible breeder who had also taken steps to expose her to everything possible when she was little. She is still pretty afraid of new situations and places she has never been to before. At the agility trial, her tail was up and she was curious about everything. Checking out people and dogs and not having any issues. When we walked to another building on Saturday, she changed to ’scaredie dog’ and tucked her tail and wanted to dart away.

If she had been exposed to all these things as a puppy, she would face everything with confidence in herself and curiousity to explore. Hopefully I’ll be able to fix her, I hope completely, of her fears. Only time will tell.

I also wonder about Muffit. He’s about 4 years old, and I get to fix his pulling on a leash, his yapping and barking when I leave him crated, his frantic behavior when he’s over stimulated. He is, also, a broken dog that needs fixing. Granted he is not as bad as he could be… he’s not aggressive at all, and he’s not as fearful as Tatum. But he’s very under confident and he rolls on his back for approval and acceptance.

Chase does some of the approval seeking too. His tail wagging, his jumping up on people.. he’s just saying “will you like me please?” and Muffit is the same way. Tatum is not, but she’s a girl collie and she has that sassiness typical of the female collies in her. She doesn’t pawn and fuss for approval, instead she just wants to make sure she’s not in any danger and no one will hurt her or restrain her.

Of course even puppies from good breeders can have issues. Some they are born with, some us handlers give to them without even knowing it. And yes I admit to that, too. That is just part of life. Just like people tend to mess up their kids, us handlers can mess up our young dogs, too. But that’s neither here nor there. The rescues have it worse off. They didn’t get a good start, and they need a lot of extra understanding.

I swear sometimes I think 70% of people who have dogs, shouldn’t. Having a dog companion is not something to make a rash decision about. It’s serious caring for another living being. And even if you don’t totally understand how dogs learn and think and behave (like dogs, they are not people in suits), you still have to accept them as dogs, as individuals, and work with and learn from them.

The experience of having a dog companion is unlike any other in the world. It’s amazing and enriching. And I feel bad for those people who will never experience it.

Good Day at DOCNA

Well, back from the DOCNA trial. As it’s after 9pm I’ve been back for a while, and the muscles are starting to stiffen up. :) But that’s okay, it was a fun day. I do wish I could run Levi and Chase both well at the same trial. Today was Levi’s day. He got 3 out of 4 Qs. Two Standard and One Jumpers. Chase only got One Q, in Snakes and Ladders. He is strong in that, though. The Gamblers I messed up because I wasn’t sure about my course. And the Standard he was blowing his contacts so we trained instead.

Muffit did pretty well.. though most of the day he was wide awake and very over stimulated. Not until about 2pm did he start to settle down. He will stay home tomorrow, one day was definitely enough for him.

Tatum did great, she slept most of the day and come out to play and work occasionally. I walked her over to another building where they were doing obedience and conformation fun matches… and that made her nervous but she didn’t die, and later she was fine again.

Levi went through the obedience fun match and did great! I was impressed and we used minimal treats. So.. I’ll be entering him in ASCA obedience this summer to see how he does and get that CD. I took Chase though too, and he needed a treat on his target stick to pay attention to me. It is still hard for him but we are working on it.

The dogs are now very tired and sleeping. The Mum is also tired, and will be sleeping shortly!
