Muffit

Muffit 2005Muffit has had some bad luck finding a home… to no fault of his own. He started life as Leopard with a family that loved him enough to have professional photos done of him. This is one of them. And he is so photogenic, too. And cute. And a doll.

That family couldn’t keep him, though we don’t know why. He went to another home and was named Wheatie. When they couldn’t keep him, he went into rescue and CAWS got him, and in November of 2005, we fostered him for a couple of months. And we adored him, and wanted to keep him, but at the time we already had five dogs and didn’t think we should keep him in our home, so off he went to another family.

There he became Shiloh. He lived there for about a year and a half… maybe even two years. I even saw him once at a Dog Day when I was doing an agility demo. He seemed pretty happy, though over stimulated by all the dogs. He no longer seemed to have his fear aggression and I was glad he’s found a family with some kids who loved him.

Muffit And MeWell… January of 2008 when I was at the Clicker Expo, my husband got a call from CAWS. The Humane Society had scanned a dog and found he had a CAWS chip. It was Shiloh. He had been dumped at the Humane Society. And he spent two weeks there before they even scanned him for a chip. My husband ran that day and picked him up, because we all still loved him.

Tatum and MuffitHe was very sick, I have never before seen a dog with such a snotty, runny nose. He had stress induced colitis, and his diarrhea was pure liquid and crimson with blood. After four rounds of antibiotics we finally kicked his illnesses.

We don’t know why this poor boy has had such rotten luck. He is a sweet as can be, he loves to play with our other dogs, and he loves to snuggle on the couch or in bed. There’s not a mean bone in his body. He doesn’t like his toenails trimmed, and he gets too excited when he sees other dogs he wants to say hi to, but we are working on these issues.

And finally, he is in his forever home. We are keeping him. Didn’t matter we were then up to five dogs… we opened our home for a sixth. We are his fourth home.. and it’s the end of the homes for him. My husband said, when Muffit came back to our home in January, that he’s staying. And I didn’t argue. Muffit has been through too many homes and needs a loving place where he is wanted and where he will be worked with.

We called him Muffit back in 2005, it just seemed to fit him. It’s after the Original Battlestar Galactica mechanical dog named Muffit. And so again, at our house, he is Muffit. And it’s his last name.

Once he learns to be more calm around other dogs and different situations, I hope he will do some flyball. We love this boy with all our hearts. He was born, probably, around 2003, and his make up birthday is May 1, 2003.

Welcome home, Muffit.

I Want to Bury my Head in the Sand

I am just burned out with Rescue. Seriously. I don’t want to do it anymore. I want to stay home with my dogs and entirely ignore the overpopulation issue, all the tens of thousands of dogs that die every year because people don’t understand them, expect them to humans in suits, and abandon them.

It’s a horrible problem. It’s all over the stupid country. And all the good things that all the good rescues are doing seem like a tiny dent in the overall huge metal monster that it is. But we can’t take any more dogs into our home. At seven, we are packed. At six we are packed. At four we were okay and could do a foster or two. But at seven we cannot take anymore. Even at six, or at five, we wouldn’t be able to take anymore.

So I want to ignore the problem now, I want to bury my head in the sand, and pretend it’s not there. I want to work with my own dogs and love them and focus on them. I want to get Tony into a home, or a foster home. We are overwhelmed and overstressed. I have our used cisco router maxed, with all the internet stuff I do for rescue.

I won’t ignore the problem. I can’t. It’s too prevalent and anyone that has any dealing with dogs even in a very small way knows about it. The problem is there. It’s talked about. We have to be aware of it. And I’ll continue to talk about it, and be aware of it, and push rescue instead of breeding. But maybe, in my house full of happy dogs, maybe here where it’s safe and cozy and there is so much love and joy, maybe here we can ignore the problem and just be happy with who we have.

Dog Address Labels

I want some new return address labels.. the ones I have at work in my desk have my maiden name on them… so yeah, it’s been almost five years, maybe more, since I bought some. And I don’t know why, but I love return address labels. I like fancy ones with dog pictures and nice text. Even though people just end up throwing them away. I always buy checks with animals on them, too. Go figure.

So Vistaprint is having a sale on their Address Labels. If you use coupon code “BlogAddress75” at checkout, you’ll receive 75% off address labels! That’s a nice savings, and they have some good choices. I do need to get some business cards from them too for Collie Rescue. As I’m going to be putting up a jar at the next Collie Specialty for donations. And cards are nice to have there too.

So off I go to order address labels and business cards and spending more money! Even though I don’t have much money left, entering all the trials I have been. And flyball tournaments too. So many dog things, so little time… and never enough money! But I can put my new address labels on my envelopes!

Foster Dogs over the Years

Collections For the last few days I’ve been loading up my dog pictures from my old album backups and into Flickr. Flickr is very convenient and easy to use, and it helps me not use up lots of my server space.

We have helped a lot of dogs. I am proud of what we have done. Some of these dogs are no longer alive, but hopefully we were able to touch their lives and make them better in some way.

We have to take a break from rescue for a while, with Lucy’s cancer and her health a concern, my husband not having a job right now, an us just being overwhelmed. So no more foster dogs. I will try to coordinate collie rescue when I can, but that is hard without any foster homes. *sigh*

Click on the image to see all the sets of our foster dogs. I know one is not there… Alice, she was cute and I can’t find any pictures of her. Bummer.

All these dogs with the exception of Bria are from 2000 and later. Bria was at my old house pre 2000.

Muffit the Muppet

Muffit! This is Muffit. Okay, his name started out as Wheatie, and then he came to live with us for a while as a foster boy. And for some reason, I just wanted to call him Muffit! Remember Muffit, the mechanical dog from the original Battlestar Galactica? Well, yup, that’s what I like to call him.

But then he went to his new home and they named him Shiloh. We fostered him for CAWS, and they are a great rescue organization. They did follow up calls, made sure all was well. I even saw Shiloh at an agility demo about a year and a half ago.. and he was running around and looked happy and I was glad to see him. It was pure luck.

Well, while I was in Los Angeles at the Clicker Expo, my husband got a call from CAWS. Poor Muffit had been dumped at the Humane Society of Utah. Not only that, the HSU didn’t scan him for a chip for two weeks! So now he is sitting next to me on the couch and he has a nasty cold. His breathing is labored. He’s super skinny, and when he came back to us his poop was complete liquid and crimson with blood. The vet thinks it was stress induced colitis. He’s on antibiotics.

He is not eating too well yet, I’ve tried raw, kibble, canned, cottage cheese.. and he just kinda picks at his food. He’s getting some down, though.

Poor guy. He’s only 26 pounds and needs to gain at least 5 to be healthy. My husband really wants to keep him. It makes us furious, and breaks our hearts, that this poor boy ended up at the shelter. The excuse was the family had to move and couldn’t take him with. The contract says, and the adopters say over and over, you return to him to the rescue! Not dumping him in the shelter! We are furious.

Well, he is safe and happy now. He might just stay here for a while.. or forever… he would make a great flyball dog. :) I wish we could give him something for his cold symptoms.

Wow the Clicker

The clicker expo, as I have said before, blew me away. I do look at my dog training in a whole new light, now. I don’t know if I can convey to you what I feel, as although I like to think I am fairly good at writing, sometimes getting my information across is difficult for me to do.

Plus, I have talked to a number of people now who do use a clicker to train, but seem to be in the same place I was, and the clicker is just a tool to mark behavior. Where clicker training is an entire training concept that molds and shapes a dog in an encouraging, positive way and gives the animals control over their environment, and helps us to communicate with an entirely different species in an amazing way.

The Karen Pryor Clicker Expo is an amazing way to really get the idea of clicker training. Clicker training uses a clicker as a marker for behavior, and also uses positive reinforcement to not only get the behaviors you want, but to mold and build a relationship with the animal.

One of the statements that struck me the hardest was that clicker training has been used in the exotic animal world for years and years. But some of the trainers, when they came to dog training, were told, and believed, that dogs are different. Dogs you use punishment to train. It’s the amazing, open minded people who challenged that belief and realized that no, dogs are exactly the same. And the people who are involved with police dogs, search and rescue dogs, military dogs… those that are changing the dog training world, slowly, to use clicker training, are the ones that impress me the most. Because those fields are so traditionally punitive. It needs to change. It is changing. It will change.

I could go on for pages and pages about clicker training, but I’ll keep my posts short as I go through the knowledge that I have absorbed. Amazing knowledge. And I’ll post up some links to some great sites, too.

MV’s Pitbulls

So what is happening to Michael Vick’s pit bulls? I haven’t posted about Michael Vick here on Tip Tail… the whole story is sad and depressing. How anyone can fight dogs I just don’t understand. And to put them through such horrible ‘training,’ which is actually abuse, is beyond me. But then again I don’t even eat animals because I want no harm to come to them.

But now the good news about the dogs. PR Web has an Article (click here to read PRweb.com) which links to www.dogtime.com that has some great videos on their front page about how 10 of the dogs are being rehabilitated and put into foster homes to learn how to live in a home and with people.

I love pit bulls. I fostered one for a short time, and she convinced me, beyond a doubt, that they are wonderful, amazing dogs. Strong willed, for sure, and also loving and sweet. But anyway, if you want some good news about these dogs, click the links above to read the good things about rescue.

The dogs might not need any Lillian Vernon coupons to get back on track, but that’s okay, they have a lot of help along the way!

Dog Address Labels

I want address labels. It’s a weakness of mine… and I don’t know why because people just throw them away anyway. but I love having a little logo and have it look nice and fancy up on the left corner of the envelope.

I’ve bought address labels from Vista Print before, and probably will do so again. I’m almost out of the ones I have. And I love being able to customize them with the Utah Collie Rescue logo, or a picture of my dogs, or anything I feel like! Mailing Labels just look so nice and they are fun and so why not?

I have also purchased business cards from Vista Print, for Utah Dogs, and would love to get some for Utah Collie Rescue, too. I could have matching business cards and return address labels. I like to match. And I like to have things look nice and professional. And Vista Print does this, and they have good prices, too. Many of their business cards are free, you must have to pay for the shipping. I don’t remember how the address labels work, I will have to go and have a look.

So if you are interested in address labels, and they’ll put a picture of your dog, or any picture of your choice on them, you might want to check out Vista Print. :)

Animal Planet and Petfinder

I got an email from Petfinder today about a new Animal Planet TV show. It’s all about Petfinder animals. I found this interesting article about it too.

I guess they are going to follow some Petfinder dogs through the adoption process and as they are placed into new homes. How fun. I’m interested in seeing what sorts of training methods they will use. And hopefully they will find responsible people for these animals.

The more awareness there is about companion animal adoption the better! I believe it is set to premer February 9th on Animal Planet. I gotta go set my dish to record.

Kip’s Stocking

Kip's Stocking This stocking was made for me way back when in the way back days, when I was doing Greyhound Rescue. One of the people who adopted a greyhound.. his name was Ajax and he was a big white boy, made these. She made this of Kip for me as a thank you.

I love this stocking. It looks exactly like him. I wish I had more for my other dogs but I don’t know how to contact her anymore, and I’m not creative enough!

And… I’m still going nutty with my new camera and flickr. LOL.
