It’s strange, teaching a dog how to play with humans. It’s so natural for them when they are puppies. But if it’s not nurtured and encouraged, appropriately, it can fade. Or if it has been a bad experience for them, they will avoid it.
Chase just naturally plays with people. And he loves tug. I didn’t have to teach him how to play. But Tatum… well, she knows how to play with other dogs, but she isn’t, still, quite sure how to play with me.
Today I was putting some dog toys a friend of mine made off the freezer, and onto a chair for a bit. Well Tatum thought it was a great pile and picked out her favorite and ran outside with it. First thing I think is great training and playing opportunity. So I go outside with her, but then all the other five dogs follow us out. So I get the toy, and bring Tatum downstairs and leave the rest upstairs.
She was still being playful so that was great. I squiggled the toy around and she chased it. I even threw it and she brought it back, because it’s more fun when it moves around. But she still won’t give a good grip on it and just full-out tug like Chase does! So we are working on that. Hopefully it’ll come!
She really is super fun to play with, that goofy collie girl.

Like they said…all work and no play makes Jack(dog) a dull dog. Do we focus too much on training and forget the fun part? and by the way..that a cute collie. Perhaps you can upload his/her photo on our site

Like they said…all work and no play makes Jack(dog) a dull dog. Do we focus too much on training and forget the fun part? and by the way..that a cute collie. Perhaps you can upload his/her photo on our site
Qor still doesn’t really play tug.. she plays keep away… from Qay. Or she takes a toy out of Targ’s mouth and taunts him with it. But she doesn’t really play with us.. the only thing she’ll do is wrestle with me. (which involves jumping on the bed and me hiding my head in my arms.. her goal is to make me pick up my head by thrashing herself around and wiggling under my arms)

HI Lower Ab Exercises welcome to Tip Tail! Yes collies are usually great with children. Especially ones named Timmy! LOL… just kidding. Collies have been publicized as great with children for years. 🙂
Hi Cute Dog Breeds. The way I train incorporates lots of play! Actually, at the beginning, it’s all play. Take the retrieve.. it’s just a game of play with the toy, run after it.. bring it back… if she doesn’t bring it back, I attach a rope to it so I bring it back to me and she chases it back!
The way I teach agility, obedience and flyball… it’s very fun for the dogs, they love it! Gone are the days of ear pinches and strict boring obedience. Now it’s clicker training and fun, for the human and the dogs! Seeing a happy dog in the obedience ring with a spring in his step and bright happy eyes.. it’s a joy to see!
He he Jen that sounds like fun! I love it when I hide my face in the blankets and the dogs roll on me and dig me out. 🙂
I hear it’s possible to teach a dog to tug… though I haven’t done it yet. Mostly with a treat bag with yummy treats in it. When they pull at it, they get a treat! But thinking about that.. maybe it’ll teach Tatum to pull at my pants more. She’s an ankle biter like a Sheltie! 🙂

I always thought it’s interesting how my dog ain’t into retrieve as game much. He’ll chase after what I throw 3-4 and lose interest. He simply doesn’t like that kind of game I guess. On the other hand he could spend hours trying to an object that I throw to other person(my brother usually ). Ball flying between us fascinates him for some reason.

Aww, that sounds really sweet and adorable. It’s good that Tatum has a patient human to teach her instead of someone who just assumes she will never play.
