This weekend I have entered Chase into a USDAA agility trial. I have taken him before… just once, if I remember correctly, and he does have one Snooker leg and one, I think, Standard leg. I have to look it up on the USDAA site again.
Should be fun. It’s outdoors, and so it might be cold. Ugh. If it’s in the 50s that’d be okay. And he’d like it better. I’ll take Tatum too, and maybe Muffit, though I haven’t decided on Muffit yet.
For the next couple of months I’m only running Levi in AKC agility, and Chase in USDAA agility. I guess maybe I’m just weak.. or something, can’t find the word, but I have a really hard time switching my brain and focus between these two dogs in the same trial. So my trainer has advised me to only run one dog per weekend. Ugh.
Of course the decision was hard to make. Chase is going to do USDAA for a while, and not AKC. Levi gets to keep doing AKC because I want to get him is MXP and MJP titles. He has 5 more to go for his MXP, and 8 more to go for his MJP. We’ll see if maybe if I can focus on him alone for a while, I can get these titles on him. He’s 8… and i don’t like to think about that.
I’ve been told a number of times that Chase would be a great USDAA dog. And so we are going to try it out. He is very fun to run in Gamblers and Snookers. It’s fun when we can make up our own course and even screw up, and still Qualify!
I’m not clear on the teams and pairs, though. Not sure how that works. I guess in June on a Saturday it is teams and pairs only. But how many times do the dogs run in teams? Just once? And Chase is in the Performance category so he jumps 22″. I don’t want him to jump 26″ though I’ve considered it. For now he’s in 22″. So I guess the teams has only 2 dogs? Oh, where is Johann when you need him? LOL.

If your team events are all on one day – you’ll run Standard, Jumpers, Snooker and Gamblers – and I’m pretty sure a three dog relay, all on that day. Here is an explanation of two and three dog relays and how they work.
It’s time plus faults for standard, jumpers and pairs (so consider that when determining what you should do to handle a fault) – snooker and gamblers rules are the same. I think there may be variations in courses from the usual, like no table in standard, and other variations – judges choice.
There is a pairs course on my Blog you can look at – one dog runs one half, you exchange the baton (don’t drop or throw) in the exchange area, and then the other dog runs the other half (or thirds for team). We ran the second half in this course.

Yeah, I can’t imagine running more than one dog in a trial. As I only have one, it’s academic! Our trainer has three dogs competing, but she only runs two at any trial and she says that’s shattering enough.

Hi Johann woot! 🙂 Ah okay.. so all the classes for the entire day are teams.. gamblers, standard, jumpers etc? I will go check out the rule books too! That is kinda cool. Guess I need a team. Not sure who I will team up with.. I still get shy, and figure no one will really want me… hrm. 🙂 And my crazy border collie boy!

LOL Pacco, we don’t have NADAC here anymore but we do have DOCNA and ASCA. When Tatum gets going, in a year or two, she will probably start in DOCNA!
It is hard to run two dogs, especially when one is a speed demon and one is a slow one!

Hey Gus! We have a local woman who has run up to 5 dogs in one trial! I dont think I could do that. 2 is hard enough.. I might run 3 at the same time eventually. Depends on how long Levi wants to run.

I have to tell you that Mum gets kind of wound up when she runs both Gracie and I, but it’s mostly because Gracie runs off! BOL! But generally speaking most gate stewards are pretty forgiving when you have pups in multiple stages but Masters always takes precedence – and Mum’s loves all the exercise she gets running back and forth. Once you get the hang of memorizing courses, it’s a lot easier.
