March 28 Update

Just a quickie update. We have class tomorrow night, but working with Levi and Chase this weekend was fun!

Chase is really getting his 2×2 weaves down! I can set that jump up, and he goes over it, and gets the 2×2 weave entry in the yard almost every single time. 🙂 9 times out of 10 for sure. He is a bit weak when I’m on the outside and he is inside nearer the polls, but we can work on that. It is just how we play, and throwing that toy as a reward seems to work great. 🙂

Levi, I’m working on his contacts. Have a board at home and we are getting a good solid 2o2o at the end of it. Hopefully that’ll transport over to the contacts, but we are doing so gradually in stages.

Lucy is doing a great job of retrieving the treat bag for me! And Angel is learning all the voice commands and hand signals for all the tricks she knows. 🙂

March Third Chase

Chase:

Chase’s class was also a lot of fun. We had the big dog class first so we could set up the course outside and catch the last of the sunlight. Hopefully it’ll be much warmer soon!

Phonebook: Chase has the phonebook exercise down pat. I put it down, and he plants both front feet on it and waits for that click. He is so smart. 🙂 Then I can move my body around, and his back end moves too, and I C/T that. The teach said he might not get to moving his back end by himself, and that’s okay. So we will continue working this back end awareness exercise.

Ladder Forwards: He goes through the ladder frontwards just fine. Not afraid of the ladder at all.

Backwards: He knows backwards really well, too, though not yet on cue. That’s okay, the cue will come. Practicing last weekend in the ladder, he didn’t really want to go backwards in the ladder, so we will have to work on that this weekend also. I’m going to be so happy when it’s lighter longer during the day, and warmer out, so I can work with them outside after work.

Nose Touch: Having a wee bit of a problem here. He does it a little bit, in class and at home, but he’s so darn gentle. Teach wants a nice hard nose touch to the hand. Was doing this with Levi and Angel, and both of them, especially Levi, give me a nice solid push, and even more so if I don’t get them the treat. Chase… he is more timid. He will look at my hand, lick my hand, and gently brush my hand with his whiskers. I think I just need to keep this up until he offers more of a push. Might take a little while with him.

Weave Poles 2×2: I understand better now. Teach put up a jump at a 90 degree angle from the 2x2s and Chase went over the jump (I haven’t taught him jumps yet, more later) and spun around and went zoom right past the weaves. Then zoom to go see the other dogs in the class. 🙂 Silly boy. I need to work this at home with less distraction, see about getting him through the 2×2 polls. I think he’ll get it pretty quickly. Haven’t had time to work on it at home yet. Ugh. (I really need to retire.)

Tire: Last weekend I set up the new tire jump I got, and Chase went right through it, no problem. 🙂 For a C/T. And now he goes through for a toy. Will be working on this, too.

2o2o: We are practicing standing on the end of a board with the back feet on and the front feet off, and treating. Chase loves this, and will hop right onto the flat board for his cookies. 🙂 I think he’ll be great at 2o2o!

Training Notes

Some dog training notes for the boys (Lucy is limping and out of commission, and Angel trains just for fun).

Levi: Took Levi to an agility run-through yesterday. I’m trying to get him to only do his tricks on cue. So we are working on sit, down, stand, back. Randomly, to see how he does.

Well, he anticipates a LOT. And offers behaviors. So I’ve also incorporated a wait in there, with my finger up, so he will stand still and do nothing. That also gets rewarded.

I was squatting down because that is how he learned the back, and it seems he needs to be reminded how to do it before I can stand with him going back. So I was squatting and doing the circuit, and every time I said sit, he would down! Goof head boy. 🙂

So for some odd reason I stood up, and then had him do them all. Well, low and behold, the boy sat! So, it seems that my body position is dependent on that sit, as well as the back. Which is just a bit funny. I will be reworking his sit with a treat over his nose when I’m squatting, so he gets the idea.

Chase: This boy is doing really well. I’ve noticed that if I bring out treats while trying to toy train him, he shuts out the toy and focuses on the treats. So… gotta just work on the toy first, I think, and then bring treats in for other activites.

I bought a new tire jump from ebay and it came last week. I also bought a teeter base. I set up the tire, and Chase has already figured out that if he goes over/through/under something that I set up, it’s a good thing. 🙂 He even went under the teeter base! LOL cutie boy.

I had him running through the tire pretty quickly. Will practice angles of entry next, and then height, but not any height for a while yet.

The 2×2 weaves are messing with me a little bit. I’m not sure I understand that one entry is okay (him going away from me), while the other (him coming toward me) is not. It’s a gate either way, isn’t it? Hrm.. I’m a bit confused. And he doesn’t seem to wrap around the poll at all when I’m half-mooning it. I will probably ask in class tomorrow night.

Otherwise, having fun!

February 2005

Life goes on, eh? 🙂 Things are good. I’m running 3.5 miles now regularly… or mostly regularly. Sometimes I’ll go the 2.93 mile route, if it’s a particularly hard run, but usually it’s 3.5 miles. Which is more than a 5k, so I can probalby do a 5k in April. Though I hope I’m not nasty slow.

It is cold… was 12F this morning. Ugh. Not fun at all. I want spring to come, I’m buying brightly colored clothes because I’m tired of the dull drab weather and snow. It snowed a lot yesterday, today is sunny but freezing cold.

Agility is fun. Haven’t had a trial since Jan but there will be another one on the 19th of this month. That’ll mark the first trial I ever went to last year. 🙂 I’m excited. 1 Year and we are in open, I think that’s awesome!

Clicker training the dogs is a riot. Been working on getting them to go backwards. All of them but Lucy has it down pat. 😀 Lucy, however, gets too frantic about the treats and is having a hard time moving backward for me to mark her with the clicker. We’ll get it, though! I think Chase needs to learn to roll over. 😀
